29th of February

Students from the Taxco Campus of ENAP enjoyed spaces at the Ex Hacienda “El Chorrillo”

Students from the Taxco Campus of the National School of Visual Arts (ENAP) enjoyed areas of the installations of UNAM located at the Ex Hacienda “El Chorrillo” during a workshop for drawing that was presented by professor René Contreras. 


Professor René Contreras, a coordinator in the degree program of Visual Arts at the Taxco Campus of ENAP, worked with the group of students in one of the patios of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco where the students interacted with the beautiful natural surroundings that make up this compound from the 16th century and is considered one of the cultural patrimonies of the people of Taxco in the city of Taxco de Alarcón. 

  


The mission of the Taxco Campus of ENAP as a university extension center in the frame of the daily actions, investigations, and spread of culture through artistic exercises, is to offer as an alternative at the degree level to favor the development of national arts and inherently the creation of art from Guerrero.

Follow-up seminar about natural insecticides

In following-up the work, conferences, and courses about natural control over plagues that since 2009 has been promoted by CEPE/UNAM – Taxco in this locality, there was a “Follow-up Seminar about Natural Insecticides” in the “Independence” auditory at this learning center.  





Those in attendance, the majority being students who participated in the course “Natural Insecticides” which was given in October of 2011 in collaboration with the Academic Unity of Earth Sciences of the Autonomous University of Guerrero (UAGro), shared their experiences and results that were obtained through the use of natural products and / or techniques to control plagues.  




During the meeting, those in attendance explained advances and some interests in discoveries from their investigations or experiments related to the new natural alternatives to control insect plagues, which represent a major option for the preservation of the natural environment.

Students from the National Preparatory School share time with foreign students from the Ex-Hacienda “El Chorrillo”

Students and teachers from the National Preparatory School No. 1, “Gabino Barreda,” visited the installations of the Learning Center for Foreign Students campus Taxco (CEPE/UNAM – Taxco) at the Ex-Hacienda “El Chorrillo”.

  

During their visit, 44 students from the 4th, 5th, and 6th years shared some time with foreign students that are learning Spanish at this educational center where they interchanged information about traditions, customs, food, and history of their respective countries of origin.  





Students and professors were also able to pass through the “Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón” botanical garden and gathered at the “Revolution” stage,” where professor Roberto Cruz, the academic secretary of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco, gave a presentation of the historic relevance of the foundation of the Ex Hacienda “El Chorrillo”.

CEPE/UNAM – Taxco presents the Latin-American String Quartet, known as one of the best groups at the international level

The National Autonomous University of Mexico and the Learning Center for Foreign Students, Taxco Campus (CEPE/UNAM – Taxco) presented the Latin-American String Quartet in this city.  The Quartet is one of the best groups on the national and international music scene.



In the frame of the 20th anniversary of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco and as part of the splendid cultural offerings of the National University there was an arrangement for the local people, as well as national and international tourists that visit this colonial city, the Latin-American String Quartet offered a notable concert at the “Revolution” stage of the Ex-Hacienda “El Chorrillo.”

The group, which is made up of three brothers, violinists Saúl and Arón and the cellist Alvaro Bitrán, along with Favier Montiel, violinist, performed an excellent program of music by Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms, and Maurice Ravel.  

 


For their freshness, precision, talent, and energy, the international critics have considered the group as one of the best quartets in the world.  In 1983 they received the Annual Prize of the Mexican Critics Association, in 2000 they obtained the Mozart Medallion that confers conjointly with the Domecq Cultural Foundation, the Austrian Embassy, and the diverse cultural Mexican institutions; and in 2007 they were awarded the Medallion of Fine Arts. 

Since 2004 to this date, the Latin-American Quartet has received support from the National Fund for Culture and the Arts (FONCA) to develop teaching activities, the spread of culture, investigation, and concerts.  Likewise, in 2009 they created and have under their supervision the Latin-American Academy of String Quartets in Caracas, and in the same frame the System for Young Orchestras of Venezuela, where they regularly work with 12 young Venezuelan quartets of excellence.  

 


To this date, the Quartet has more than seventy CD’s and has recorded a great part of the important repertoire for string quartets from Latin-American composers.  In this context, they have received nominations for a Grammy Award, in 2002 (for best musical recording of chamber music and for best CD of Latin concert music) for their sixth volume of the complete 17 quartet compositions of Villa-Lobos. 

The group has performed on the most important stages of the world.  They include performances in New Zealand, Milan, Amsterdam, Bonn, Brussels, Luxemburg, Montreal, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Los Angeles, Miami, Tokyo, Boston, Washington, and at Carnegie Hall in New York.

The Xinaxtli Theater Group parades through the streets of Taxco for Carnival



As every year, the Xinaxtli Theater Group from CEPE/UNAM – Taxco participated in the tradition of Tuesday Carnival which, as in various parts of the world, is observed in this colonial city.  





The Carnival parade, organized by the government of Taxco de Alarcón, ran through the principal streets until arriving in the Zocalo, or Plaza Borda, and then directed to the Ojeda Barrio where the festival finished with the presentation of various dance groups.  






Under the direction of Professor Layo Oviedo, the participants of the Xinaxtli Theater Group of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco paraded with costumes made by the actual members of the group, created with Mexican themes and details of Carnival in Venice.


18th of February

Traditional and Folkloric Music of Mexico in Taxco’s Zocalo

Alegres las Aves Cantan is the title of the concert that was presented by the Zarahuato group in the city of Taxco de Alarcón’s Zocalo, thanks to the collaboration of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco and the cultural division of the local government.




With harp, guitar, and violin, young musicians accompanied a pair of dancers, delighting the local population and national and international tourists, with folkloric Mexican songs related to our Cosmo-vision pertaining to birds and demonstrating the biodiversity and multicultural essence of Mexico.




The Zarahuato group, formed in 2003 with the objective of spreading and investigating the cultural diversity and nature of Mexico through the means of traditional music, interpreted in less than an hour of sounds and rhythms from Guerrero and Michoacán in which birds are the protagonists.  



To finalize the presentation, one of the founders of the group, Yasbil Y. B. Mendoza Huerta, a graduate student in ethno-musicology with the National School of Music of UNAM, said that these types of concerts are a sample of what can be found in the states of Guerrero and Michoacán, much more than narcotics trafficking.

CEPE/UNAM – Taxco receives Dr. Roberto Castañón as the new director of the Learning Center for Foreign Students (CEPE)

With the objective of strengthening the work and institutional collaboration, Dr. Roberto Castañón Romo, who on the past 16th of January took possession as the new director of the  Learning Center for Foreign Students of UNAM, visited the installations of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco and attended a meeting of the Advisory Council of this educational center.  







Accompanied by Professor Ma. Isabel Vázquez, the academic secretary of CEPE/UNAM, Lic. Rafael Avilés Solis, the director of the Administrative Unit, and professor Gerardo Reza Calderón, the general secretary, Dr. Castñón participated in the Advisory Council meeting of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco during which he shared with his advisors the perspectives of work of this university campus.




In the meeting, professor Javier Cuétara, the director of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco, presented the mission and vision of this educative center and explained his line of principals of work.  He explained the labor that is done in relation with the courses of English targeted to the local public and of the Spanish courses for foreign students; in regard to cultural diffusion, as well as the restoration and rehabilitation project of the “Casona;” the inauguration of the Botanical Garden “Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón,” and the digitalization of the Historic Municipal Archives of Taxco, under the protection of UNAM.




During their speech, the council recognized the work that is done at CEPE/UNAM – Taxco in this colonial city and they reiterated their support to continue to propel education and cultural diffusion in the northern zone of the state of Guerrero through this National University campus. 

Dr. Castañón then called those in attendance to collaborate in the design of the work program of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco; as well as to impel the possible ways to implement degree programs on line that UNAM offers.

Fernando García Torres offers a magnificent piano recital in Taxco de Alarcón



The renowned Mexican pianist Fernando García Torres offered a magnificent and moving recital where he performed important pieces from Scarlatti, Mozart, Debussy, Liszt, and Chopin on the “Revolution” stage of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco.  




During the concert that took place for more than an hour to delight the public in attendance, the pianist gracefully performed with precision, velocity, and talent, interpreting melodies such as the Sonata in B flat major, K. 333, Reflections of water, Sonnet 104 of Petrarch, Nocturne No. 3 (Dreams of Love), Estudio from Concerto No. 2 and La Leggerezza, among others.
 
García Torres is one of the most notable Mexican pianists on the national and international music scene.  With studies in masters and doctorate degrees in Musical Arts from the University of Michigan, he has developed a brilliant career as a pianist with the most important Mexican orchestras:  The Mexico City Philharmonic, the Philharmonic of UNAM, the Mexico State Symphony, the Xalapa Symphony, and the National Symphony.  




At the end, the public in attendance recognized the talent, dedication, and discipline of maestro García Torres cheering him to perform three encores with warm applauses. 



14th of February

The Film cycle dedicated to Oscar Wilde begins


“The importance of calling him Ernesto,” a story about a rich man who has a double life and is directed by Oliver Parker, was the movie that began the film cycle dedicated to Irish writer, poet, and playwright Oscar Wilde at the “Independence” auditorium of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco.
 
Starting on the 14th of February through the 6th of March, each Tuesday there will be a different film at five in the afternoon.  This series of films will contain two versions of “The Portrait of Dorian Gray,” the first from 1945 and the second from 2011, which narrates the story of a young wary who lives a nocturnal life and longs for and is obsessed with eternal youth.  The cycle will end with “Wilde,” directed by Brian Gilbert, which is a biographical movie about Wilde’s life, someone who is considered to be one of the most notable personalities of his period due to his special genius.

 


During the presentation of the film cycle, Professor Javier Cuétara, accompanied by Professor Fran M. Fray, invited those in attendance to share, debate, and to reflect on the works of this important writer who died at an early age and who scandalized British society in his time.

The Xinaxtli Theater Group participates in the 56th Science, Arts, and Humanities Meeting

The Xinaxtli Theater Group of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco presented two different plays at the 56th Science, Arts, and Humanities Meeting, organized by the Coordination of Scientific Investigations and the Biology Institute of UNAM.

 


In its participation, the Xinaxtli Theater Group presented “The Voice of the Earth,” a group of scenes created by the professor of theater from CEPE/UNAM – Taxco Layo Oviedo, that narrates the myths of the origin and birth of Corn and criticizes the abuse and exploitation that is excessive of the natural resource that comes from the Earth. 

 


The theater group, made up of young people from Taxco, also presented “The Jaguar’s Spots,” a representation of a legend about the origin of the markings on this feline, which symbolize the pre-Hispanic world.  Written in a poetic language, this play permits us to discover the Cosmo vision of the pre-Hispanic world and the relation with the stars and nature through the story of a jaguar. 

During the meeting, which was held at the installations of the Biology Institute and the Botanical Garden at University City on the 10th and 11th of February, the public in attendance was able to appreciate the collection of flora and fauna of great scientific value and to enjoy the wide artistic and cultural program suitable for families. 


11th of February

Conference about the Náhuatl Language in Mexican Spanish



“The conquered conquistador: Náhuatl in Mexican Spanish,” was the title of the conference that Professor Javier Cuétara presented during the 56th Science, Arts, and Humanities Meeting, organized by the Coordinator of Scientific Investigation and the Biology Institute of Higher Education. 

During his participation, Javier Cuétara Priede, the director of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco, described the principal roots of the Náhuatl language, its origins that have permeated Spanish or Castilian that is currently spoken in our country.

The 56th Science, Arts, and Humanities Meeting, for the first time was held at the Biology Institute and the Botanical Gardens at University City, had as its objective to spread the experience of the human mind which can understand and explain concepts through science and appreciate a multitude of manifestations in art and humanities.



10th of February

Didactic concert of classical music for chamber orchestra





With great interest and a large audience of young people from Taxco, foreign Spanish students that are currently taking different course levels at this center, and the general public, the Chamber Orchestra from the Morelense Center of Arts presented a didactic concert of classical music at the “Revolution” stage of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco.



During the presentation, the Chamber Orchestra performed works by well-known composers such as Claude Debussy, Franz Danzi, Ignace Joseph Pleyel, Antonio Vivaldi, and Johann Sebastian Bach.  To perform the didactic concert, the performers explained the related themes of the classical music, as well as the historical and cultural context of the pieces that were performed.


 


The objective of these types of presentations is to encourage the public in attendance to participate, as well as contribute to the exposure to classical music performed live and to develop auditory comprehension.


 
10th of February

Course to update the 2012 teaching staff “Technology, the 2.0 Web and teaching practices”




As part of the commitment of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco with its teaching staff, today the on line course “Technology, the 2.0 Web and teaching practices” was inaugurated which will be held from the 13th of February through the 2nd of March, with a duration of 24 accredited hours.

During the inauguration, Professor Roberto Muñoz Vázquez from CEPE – CU assured that the technologies of information are basic tools to assist in the process of teaching / learning of any student.  Equally, he expressed the proposition of the course and described its contents to the teachers.



The general objective of this on line course is to offer the students the knowledge and abilities to integrate the virtual social networks in academic confines such as forming transmissions and appropriation of knowledge.  To complete the course, the intention is that the students apply their knowledge of the technology of information to integrate digital tools and their school activities in the construction of an educational blog.



8th and 9th of February

TV UNAM produces a commemorative video of the 20 years of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco and visits the Ex Hacienda “El Chorrillo”





To celebrate 20 years of work and the presence of the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Guerrero, CEPE/UNAM – Taxco prepared a commemorative video in collaboration with TV UNAM, a cultural channel from the Higher Learning Department of UNAM. 


 


For this video, a production group from the university television channel made a visit for two days at the Ex Hacienda “El Chorrillo” with the proposition of filming the installations, classes with foreign and local students, the cultural courses and events that CEPE/UNAM – Taxco organizes, as well as interviewing personnel that work at this university campus and members of the Advisory Council. 




For two days, the producer Luz María Graue and her team of workers filmed images of the Ex Hacienda “El Chorrillo,” a beautiful historic compound from the 16th Century located at the northern part of this City, as well as Historical Municipal Archives of Taxco, under the restoration of UNAM, and of the academic and cultural life that is developing in this educational institution.  

Through these types of actions and inter-institutional collaborations, CEPE/UNAM – Taxco is able to reinforce its presence as a Higher Learning Educational Center in the State of Guerrero.

Lorena Alcaraz begins the photographic study of the restoration process of the “Casona”





The well-known Mexican photographer Lorena Alcaraz Minor, who was in charge of documenting the remodeling of the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City, began the photographic study of the restoration process of the “Casona” located at the Ex Hacienda “El Chorrillo,” a building that has been granted as a loan to UNAM since 1992.


 


In the frame of the activities to celebrate 20 years of CEPE/UNAM – Taxco in the State of Guerrero, this photographic study will document the previous state, the evolution, and the result of the work done in restoration and remodeling that will take place in the “Casona,” a construction that will be cataloged by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).


  


In addition to the series of images of the process of restoring the “Casona,” that will be captured by the lens of Alcara Minor, the photographer also took pictures of the administrative and teaching faculty that form CEPE/UNAM – Taxco with the objective of  portraying part of the current staff of this educative center.
